It all started in June 2000, when Camron's brother asked him to sing at his wedding reception. Camron agreed but was not told what song it was until the week before. When he found out that it was "From This Moment" (Shania Twain and Bryan White) he decided that something must be done, because only Bryan White and a few others can sing that high. That day he called the girl he was asked to sing with and told her that he would write a song and send her the accompaniment the following day. She agreed and they decided to keep it a secret to everyone. Within the next hour, "One Heart" was basically written and all it needed was some accompaniment. Camron knew that his piano skills were limited and that help would be needed. He thought of the best piano player he knew, Mark Peterson, and gave him a call. The only problem was that Mark was in Utah and would not be home for several weeks. Then Camron walked outside his bedroom door and told his brand new room-mate (and not yet friend), Mark Baker, that he really needed some help writing this accompaniment. Mark agreed and sat down at his Roland Keyboard and began playing some ideas. Camron loved the sound and before the day was over it was complete. The following day background strings were added and the finished copy was burned to a CD and sent." It turned out better than we had hoped." That week, Mark and Camron, realized that Heavenly Father gives everyone talents and that He can take those talents away if they are not used.
This all was not completely new since Camron served a mission in the Canada Toronto West Mission and there he wrote the mission song, "Chosen For All Time." When he finished it, the first person he asked to sing it was his good mission friend, Elder Brent Slade. Brent had a voice unlike anyone he had ever heard, it was powerful, yet, soothing, warm, and controlled. (Listen, You'll See.) Well, Brent and Camron returned home in the summer of 1998 and continued their friendship in Arizona. When Camron and Mark were discussing who would sing their songs, Camron showed Mark a recording that had Brent singing "Chosen For All Time" with Mark Peterson playing the piano. Wasting no time Mark B. and Camron went and visited Brent that night and shared their plan. "He too felt it was right (The spirit was so strong)." The three of them began meeting twice a week which quickly turned into five times a week. Three weeks later they had completed five songs and had ideas for several others.
Then great news came, Brent informed Camron that Mark Peterson's plane was landing at that moment. So that night they met with Mark P. to share their ideas. "We played the music to "Joseph's Testimony" and within five minutes he not only had it memorized, but had made the original version sound like a primary song in comparison." We officially grouped together that night and NlightN had begun.
After another week went by we realized that we were getting close to going into the studio to record and we began talking about who else we would like on the CD. Brent has a friend that toured with Les Miserables as "Eponine" and each of us felt that she had the most amazing female voice. We immediately gave Mindy Smoot a call in Utah. She sounded really excited and said that she was to be in New York and Europe over the next three weeks, but that as soon as she was back she would be available. We booked a flight for her to come down August 14th. Good news continued. We decided that we would see if we could get one more male voice to sing for us. There was no doubt as to who it would be, and for those of you who have heard Todd Welker sing, understand exactly what we mean. He also lives in Utah (with his wife and new daughter), but as Camron explained the situation, and our desire to have him apart of it, he too eagerly agreed.
"I have always had the goal to write music for Todd Welker to sing, and Heavenly Father is allowing it to happen." -Camron.
It looks as if he too will be flying down on August 14th. We will be entering the studio on that Thursday and Friday, and will be putting on a fireside that Wednesday. We also are planning to have a concert on Thursday (August 17th) in the Mesa/Gilbert area and another in Thatcher/Safford on that Friday (August 18th) to give all of you a preview of what the CD will sound like. We are confident that we could not find three better voices, for this project. |
